Thursday, May 15, 2014-softball


MELROSE LADY DUTCHMEN SOFTBALL: 
The Lady Dutchmen split a double header defeating Yellow Medicine East 11-0 in five innings and but fell a 6-5 to Staples-Motley.  In the first game Melrose hammered out 14 hits with Nikki Zierden and Morgan Notch both hitting over-the-fence home runs. It was the first time every anyone had hit a ball over the fence for a home run. Justine Revermann, Sandra Sprenger and Shelia Poepping all doubled in the game.  The Lady Dutchmen took control of the game with a six-run rally in the third inning. They ended the game with a three run rally in the fifth innings. The team used some good hitting by Holly Hellerman (videos below) and base running to score their runs.
Kayla Austing
Madison Rausch earned the win pitching all five innings. She did not allow a batter to reach base until the third inning. She retired the first eight batters she faced and faced only 20 batters in the game.
Nikkie Zierden
In the second game Melrose place catch all game long and almost pulled out a victory. The team did allow runs, but also made some good defensive plays (videos above and at end)
The team rallied for two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 6-4. Staples-Motley rallied for two runs in the sixth inning, but the Lady Dutchmen kept the pressure on. In the seventh they rallied for one more run, despite hitting into a double play.

Melrose begins post season play Monday at Staples.
