Homecoming Week
Homecoming week was held this past week at the Melrose Area High School.
Presided over by a court with King Daniel Klassen and Queen Savana Bitz, the school noted the event  with all pageantry and activities the accompany the week.The week concluded with a 34-6 victory by football team.

Other activity results were:
Cross Country: Boys took first at Paynesville Invite.

Swimming: The Lady Dutchmen topped Montevideo on Tuesday. On Saturday the team finished… a the Bemidji Invite.

Tennis: Melrose defeated MACCRAY on Tuesday but fell to Osakis on Thursday.

Volleyball had good week posting wins over ACGC on Tuesday and Montevideo on Thursday.
Boys Soccer had it rough as the team was defeated Wednesday by St. Cloud Cathedral and Thursday by Minnewaska.

Girls Soccer also had a tough games fall to Cathedral on Tuesday and Hilcrest on Thursday.

Members of the 2018 homecoming royal court are (from left) freshmen attendants Josh Brinkman and Molly Kraemer, tenth grade attendants Kierra Hellermann and Henry Braun, junior attendants Camryn Brinkman and Bradley Hellermann, King Daniel Klassen, Queen Savana Bitz, senior attendants Allie Toenies and Mitchell Heinen, Emily Scherping and Travis Bertram, Julia Welle and Spencer Meyer and Megan Miland and Sam Heller.  The coronation of the king and queen was Sept. 25 at the coronation ceremony in the Marit Elliott Performing Art Center, Melrose.
Trivia Answer
As far as anyone know the University of Missouri played a football game in 1911 in which alumni were invited back to watch. This was for a long time considered the first homecoming. However, other records record such an event in 1909 in Waco, Texas between Southwest State and Baylor, Northern Illinois University records a celebration in 1903.

The Lady Dutchmen volleyball team was defeated in three sets by Sauk Centre yesterday day. The scores were 25-20, 25-17, 25-10.  
The Dutchmen and Lady Dutchmen soccer games set at Zimmerman yesterday were postponed. The Lady Dutchmen tennis match was moved to today at Benson.
Melrose football is plays at Pierz tonight. Tomorrow the Cross country teams travel to the Milaca Mega-Meet. Melrose Dutchmen soccer host Rocori at 10 a.m.
Trivia Answer
A team needs only 65 points to win a 5-set match. However it needs 75 points to win in three or four sets.

Laura Funk (556), (top photograph) lead a contingent of Melrose Area runners including Madison Christenson (behind Funk), Chloe Ellering (554), Brooke Wuertz (behind Ellering), Bridget Hingeveld (559) and Abby Heinen (behind Hingeveld) as the girls’ race started Sept. 17 in Melrose.  In the boys race  (right photograph) Tyler Pohlmann raced passed Paynesville’s James Pritchett to earn 15th place and giving Melrose five finishers in the top 15 of the boys race. Melrose Area finished in second place in the boys’ race and fifth the girls’ race.  The team next competes in the Milaca Mega meet Saturday. It was a busy, and somewhat frustrating day for the Lady Dutchmen in other contests.
Melrose fell 7-0 to Minnewaska in Tennis, and 7-1 to Little Falls in girls’ soccer.  The swim team had good times but bell 114-72 to Sauk Centre.  The volleyball team came home smiling posting a 3-1 at Minnewaska.

Tennis Triumph

Kirsten Dragseth (above) helped the Lady Dutchmen with her play in number three doubles as  Melrose  defeated Yellow Medicine East in a conference match-up yesterday at Melrose.  Singles players Paige Danzl (bottom left) and Jessica Danzl (bottom right) both won their competition.
The team also won at two singles matches and swept the doubles competition.
