MELROSE AREA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
The Melrose Area Public School Dist. 740 board approved Chuck Noll and Vaughn Glasener as co-head coaches of the 2012 football team.
The board also accepted the resignation of Emily Schiffler as head tennis coach.
The board also approved reconstruction of the football, track, softball, and soccer areas.

MELROSE DUTCHMEN BASKETBALL
The Pierz Pioneers outscored Melrose 9-3 in overtime to defeat Melrose 82-76 in the semi-final of Section 6AA-North Sub-Section playoffs.
Austin Van Beck (right) scored 23 points for Melrose. Scottie Stone finished with 18. Mitch Niehaus and Isaac Sawyer both had nine points. Jess Kasper scored six points for Pierz in the overtime.
Melrose finishes is season with a 20-6 record.

MELROSE DUTCHMEN BASKETBALL
The Melrose Dutchmen downed Osakis 77-51 in the quarter finals of the Section 6AA-Sub-Section-North playoffs at Melrose. Scott Stone led Melrose with 32 points. 25 of them came in the first half.
Isaac Sawyer had 14 points, Ryan Elfering finished with 13 and Austin Van Beck had 11 points.
Seth Noll's drives (left) brought six points to the Dutchmen score.
Other 6AA-North Scores: 1-LPGE-71 8-Holdingford-41, 4-Sauk Centre-65 5-Albany-62 (OT), 3-Pierz 77 6-Staples-Motley-37.
6AA-South Scores: 1-Litchfield 75 8-Paynesville-31, 5-Minnewaska-53 4-NL-S-51, 2-Morris/CA-70 7-EV-W 69, 3-Benson-78 6-SJP-61.

MELROSE LADY DUTCHMEN BASKETBALL
The Melrose Lady Dutchmen basketball season ended in the semi-final round of the Girls' 6AA-North Sub-Section playoffs. Staples-Motley's outside shooting and defense enabled the Cardinals to win 54-31.  Jenna Orth led melrose with 16 points. Points also scoring for Melrose were Emily Goerdt-7, Annie Herkenhoff-6 and Gabi Sawyer-5.
Melrose finishes its season with a 17-9 record.

MELROSE-SAUK CENTRE FUSION SWIMMING
Keenan Pearson finished the 100 Butterfly at 57.08 and took 16th in the Minnesota State High School League Class A swimming and diving meet. His preliminary time was 55.0.

SAUK CENTRE-MELROSE WRESTLING
Junior Roosevelt Austin finished the 2012 season with a 34-7 record. His season ended in the first round of the wrestle backs. wrestling in the Class AA 195 division pinned his opponent  Chandler Arredondo (19-8) of Richfield  in the opening round of the state tournament.
Austin fell in the quarterfinals 4-2 to Cody Hazelett (35-6) of Simley,
In the first round of wrestlebacks Austin fell by injury default to Garret Wolf of Plainview/
Elgin-Millville (44-4). More information will appear in the March 7 Issue of the Melrose Beacon. 
MELROSE-SAUK CENTRE FUSION SWIMMING
Junior Keenan Pearson finished the preliminary round of the 100 Butterfly in 55.00 of the Class A State meet. That qualified him for ninth place on the day. He will be the top seed of the consolation round.

MELROSE DUTCHMEN BASKETBALL
The Melrose Dutchmen concluded their 2011-12 regular season with a 73-63 win over Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta at Melrose. Scottie Stone had 26 points to lead Melrose. Isaac Sawyer (left) followed with 17 and Ryan Elfering had 12. Melrose opens playoffs Thursday, March 8 hosting Osakis.  More information will appear in the March 7 Issue of the Melrose Beacon.

MELROSE LADY DUTCHMEN BASKETBALL
Overtime win in Playoffs

Melrose-52 Osakis-51
Annie Herkenhoff's jump shot with about eight seconds to go in the game gave Melrose a 52-51 overtime win over Osakis in the Section 6AA-North playoffs. Herkenhoff finished the game with 14 points. Jenna Orth led the team with 17 points and Shelby Uphoff (24, right  photograph) came off the bench to score 12 points.
Gabi Sawyer tied the game on a lay-up with less than a minute in regulation.

Sauk Centre and Albany play Saturday at 5:30 at St. John's. Melrose and Staples-Motley play right after them.










MELROSE BOYS BASKETBALL
The Melrose Dutchmen earned the number two seed in the upcoming 6AA-Sub-Section North playoffs. Melrose opens the tournament facing Osakis Thursday, March 8 at Melrose. The Dutchmen conclude their regular season Thursday, March 1 hosting Morris.
