MELROSE TRACK AND FIELD
Nine individuals and one relay team will represent Melrose Wednesday, May 28 at the Section 5A track meet.

The list below shows the event Participant Sub-Section Finish (F) and their time or distance (T/D).

Listed below are the top Melrose finishers in event in which Melrose did not qualify some one for Section competition.


Tuesday May 20, 2014-softball

MELROSE LADY DUTCHMEN SOFTBALL
The Lady Dutchmen's season ended with a 4-1 loss in the playoffs to Staples-Motely at Staples. Melrose fell behind 4-0 by the four inning as Megan Vetsch struck out 11 in the seven-inning game.  Melrose had six hits in the game for six different players. Nikki Zierden double and had an RBI. Kayla Austing scored the team's run in the fifth inning.  Morgan Notch did not walk anyone, but was charged with the loss.

Tuesday, May 20, 2014-Baseball


MELROSE DUTCHMEN BASEBALL
The Dutchmen needed only five innings to top ACGC 13-3 this afternoon at Melrose. The team started slow and spotted ACGC a 3-0 lead before it got untracked. Melrose did have 15 hits in the game, with 12 coming between the third and fifth inning. While Colton Meyer blasted a double among his three hits. He wasn't the only one hitting well. Justin Wolbeck, who came into the game in the third inning, was 2-for-2 and score three times. Austin Schoenberg twice drew bases loaded walks and also had an RBI single. Cole Van Beck contributed three hits, scored once and drove in two more. Number nine batter Erik Barten started rallies in the third and fourth innings by leading and reaching base. Melrose batted around both innings.  The game ended with Melrose slapping out five hits in fifth inning to score four needed net the game by the 10-run rule. Pinch hitter Ben Klaphake (pictured right) drove in the final run of the game.  
Tyler Braegelmann started and earned the win Colton Meyer finished the game in the fifth inning. The two combined to strike out six ACGC batters.

Friday, May 16, 2014-baseball


MELROSE DUTCHMEN BASEBALL:
Matthew Beste was charged with the loss in a 6-5 game to BOLD at Olivia.  Melrose rallied to tie the score in the fifth inning at 3-3. BOLD came back with two of its own in the bottom of that inning. Austin Schoenberg and Anthony Welle both had two hits in the game.

MELROSE DUTCHMEN AND 
LADY DUTCHMEN GOLF
The Melrose Dutchmen and Lady Dutchmen golfers concluded their West Central Conference seasons today with a double-header at Montevideo and Benson. 
In the boys contests Jacob Dickhaus had the teams' best round scoring a 39 to take fourth place in the Benson contest.  Isaac Lieser finished the year ranked 11th in the boys standings.
Brooklyn Loxtercamp finished 15th in the girls standings shoe scored a 49 in both the Benson and Montevideo rounds. Kate Maus had a 48 at Montevideo. 
The Dutchmen finished sixth in the final team standings and the Lady Dutchmen finish in eight place.

Thursday, May 15, 2014-softball


MELROSE LADY DUTCHMEN SOFTBALL: 
The Lady Dutchmen split a double header defeating Yellow Medicine East 11-0 in five innings and but fell a 6-5 to Staples-Motley.  In the first game Melrose hammered out 14 hits with Nikki Zierden and Morgan Notch both hitting over-the-fence home runs. It was the first time every anyone had hit a ball over the fence for a home run. Justine Revermann, Sandra Sprenger and Shelia Poepping all doubled in the game.  The Lady Dutchmen took control of the game with a six-run rally in the third inning. They ended the game with a three run rally in the fifth innings. The team used some good hitting by Holly Hellerman (videos below) and base running to score their runs.

Madison Rausch earned the win pitching all five innings. She did not allow a batter to reach base until the third inning. She retired the first eight batters she faced and faced only 20 batters in the game.
Nikkie Zierden
In the second game Melrose place catch all game long and almost pulled out a victory. The team did allow runs, but also made some good defensive plays (videos above and at end)
The team rallied for two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 6-4. Staples-Motley rallied for two runs in the sixth inning, but the Lady Dutchmen kept the pressure on. In the seventh they rallied for one more run, despite hitting into a double play.

Melrose begins post season play Monday at Staples.
