Tuesday, Sept. 19
Trivia Question:  West Central Area won the boys and girl championships in the Melrose Invitational Tuesday. Which was the last school to win both championships of the Melrose Invitational.
Successful Night

It was  successful night for Melrose today. The volleyball team posted a 3-0 win to stay unbeaten in the West Central Conference. It face Sauk Centre, which fell 3-0 to Morris tonight, on Thursday. The swimming team held off a challenge by Sauk Centre to post a 104-82 win. The boys soccer team returned of Little Falls with a 2-1 victory. The Cross Country team  had a third placed finish by Preston Poepping in the boys' race and a fourth place finish by Laura Funk in the girls race. There were some losses. The tennis team fell 7-0 and the girls soccer team fell 6-3 to Western Ottertail United. More on the contests will appear in the Sept. 27 issue of the Beacon.
Trivia Answer: The last school to win both the boys and girls championships of the Melrose Invitational was Melrose, which turned the trick last year.

Friday, Sept. 15
Following blocks by Brady Helmin (11) and Sam Sjorgren (74) and an ability to break tackles enabled Luke Glasener to get through the line and score for Melrose.  Glasener scored one on rushing and one with a touchdown catch.  Helmin scored the first touchdown for Melrose.The Melrose Dutchmen had one of their most dominating games of the last few years downing Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted  56-0 Friday night. Melrose controlled the line of scrimmage offensively and defensively. The team had just one punt in the game. It scored almost every time it had the ball finishing with over 400 yards of offense and holding the Lakers to 145 total yards in offense.  More on the game will be in the Sept. 20 issue of the Melrose Beacon. Thursday, Sept. 14
Jhonathan Villalta went to the ground in a goal attempt against Minnewaska. The ball went wide of the net, but Melrose won the game 7-0 this afternoon at Melrose. The Lady Dutchmen soccer team did not fare as well falling 8-0 to Zimmermann. The volleyball team, however, continued its solid season defeating Morris in three games. In cross country Melrose's boys' team was third while the girls' claimed seventh at meet at New London. Tuesday, Sept. 12
Melrose's Leah Berscheit (left) and Holdingford's Tessa Schwinghammer congratulated each other on their swims in the 400FSR, won by Melrose, won the meet 66-35. The Lady Dutchmen had nine first place finishes in the meet.  At home the Lady Dutchmen were also shining on Tuesday. On the Melrose tennis courts, the Lady Dutchmen pounded out a 4-3 win over LPGE/USA.  That evening in the Melrose gymnasium, the volleyball team had a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-18) win over BOLD. Monday, Sept. 11
It was joyous day on the tennis courts, a good day for a run, but a disappointing outing on the soccer fields Monday Sept. 11.  Kaitlyn Welle (right) and other members of the Lad Dutchmen did their best to work through the St. John's Prep defense but fell 6-0 at Melrose.  While the game was commencing the Dutchmen were finishing their game with Hillcrest Academy at Fergus Fall. That resulted in a 14-2 loss by Melrose. On the Melrose tennis courts the Lady Dutchmen scored a 6-1 win over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa. The cross country teams both finished sixth of 14 teams in a meet at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle. Laura Funk's fifth place finish was the best of any Melrose runner. Next Up

The Melrose teams continue action today with the tennis team hosting LPGE and the volleyball team hosting BOLD. The swim will travel to Holdingford for a conference meet.
