Tough luck at home
St. John’s David Eichinger (32) and Melrose’s Brandon Montanez chased down a loose ball in the contest this afternoon at Melrose.
The Dutchmen soccer team applied pressure for almost the entire game, but failed to get the ball into the net falling 2-0 to St. John’s Prep this afternoon. Home field didn’t help much on the tennis courts either where the Lady Dutchmen were edged 7-0 by Osakis. In Montevideo, however, the volleyball team and one of its betters all-around nights posting a 3-1 to keep in top of the WCC standings.  More on the games will be in the Oct. 4 issue of the Melrose Beacon.

Trivia Answer:  If a team takes the top five places in cross-country it earn a total of 15 points. That is considered a perfect score in that sport.

Week in Review
Determined team tackling kept Pierz from having long-sustained runs against Melrose.
Preston Poepping, third place for boys.
Laura Funk, fourth place for girls.



There were plenty of good matches, but few wins for the Dutchmen and Lady Dutchmen teams this past week. Ons team that remained hot was the Lady Dutchmen swim team that defeated Sauk Centre 104-82 in a dual meet on Tuesday night.  There were some close races and fans saw two Sauk Centre records fall.  For the second time in two weeks there was a shut out on the Melrose football field, unfortunately it was the Dutchmen football team that was shut out falling 17-0 to third ranked Pierz on Friday. The game was a defensive battle with Pierz putting on 10 points late in the game. The Melrose volleyball team was involved in two 3-0 wins topping ACGC on Tuesday, but falling to Sauk Centre 3-0 on Thursday. There is now a three-way tie for first in the WCC volleyball standings. The cross-country team continued to show improvements as individuals and a team. The team had an individual third place finish by Preston Poepping, in the boys’ race at the 11-team Melrose Invitational on Tuesday. In the girls’ race Laura Funk claimed fourth place.  Saturday the Dutchmen and Lady Dutchmen competed in the Milaca Mega Meet.  The Dutchmen earned 20th out of the 23 Class AA teams and the Lady Dutchmen were 18th out of 25 girls teams. All totaled there were over 4000 runners with 102 boys and 97 girls schools participating. The Lady Dutchmen tennis team found it tough going falling 7-0 to Minnewaska on Tuesday and 6-1 to Benson/KMS on Thursday. The win came from Paige Danzl and Natalie Wilwerding who won the number two singles contest 6-4 7-6. Soccer had some highs and lows this week. The girls had it best offensive showing in a 6-3 loss to West Ottertail on Tuesday, and then fell 7-0 to Cathedral on Thursday. It was Cathedral day Thursday as it topped Melrose 6-0 in the boy’s contest. The boys’ team, which defeated Little Falls 2-1 on Tuesday, finished the week taking third at the Melrose Invitational. It lost 4-2 to champion Lincoln International, then rebounded to tie runner-up Central Minnesota Christian 1-1 in the final game. Pelican Rapids fell in two games at the four-team invite.  Over all the boys were defeated.

At Melrose: 5pm Girls Soccer vs. Becker; 6pm Volleyball vs. ACCG. On the road: 4:30pm Cross Country at Paynesville; 5pm Boys Soccer at Becker; 6pm Swimming at Montevideo.
Thursday, Sept. 28:
At Melrose: 4pm Tennis vs. Osakis; 5:30pm Boys Soccer vs. St. John’s Prep. On the road: 5pm Girls’ Soccer vs. St. John’s Prep. 6pm Volleyball at Montevideo.
Friday, Sept. 29: 7pm Football at Rockford.
Saturday, Sept. 29:
9am Tennis at WCC in Alexandria.
1pm Swimming at Bemidji Invite.

Trivia Question:  West Central Area won the boys and girl championships in the Melrose Invitational Tuesday. Which was the last school to win both championships of the Melrose Invitational.
Successful Night

It was  successful night for Melrose today. The volleyball team posted a 3-0 win to stay unbeaten in the West Central Conference. It face Sauk Centre, which fell 3-0 to Morris tonight, on Thursday. The swimming team held off a challenge by Sauk Centre to post a 104-82 win. The boys soccer team returned of Little Falls with a 2-1 victory. The Cross Country team  had a third placed finish by Preston Poepping in the boys' race and a fourth place finish by Laura Funk in the girls race. There were some losses. The tennis team fell 7-0 and the girls soccer team fell 6-3 to Western Ottertail United. More on the contests will appear in the Sept. 27 issue of the Beacon.
Trivia Answer: The last school to win both the boys and girls championships of the Melrose Invitational was Melrose, which turned the trick last year.

Friday, Sept. 15
Following blocks by Brady Helmin (11) and Sam Sjorgren (74) and an ability to break tackles enabled Luke Glasener to get through the line and score for Melrose.  Glasener scored one on rushing and one with a touchdown catch.  Helmin scored the first touchdown for Melrose.The Melrose Dutchmen had one of their most dominating games of the last few years downing Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted  56-0 Friday night. Melrose controlled the line of scrimmage offensively and defensively. The team had just one punt in the game. It scored almost every time it had the ball finishing with over 400 yards of offense and holding the Lakers to 145 total yards in offense.  More on the game will be in the Sept. 20 issue of the Melrose Beacon. Thursday, Sept. 14
Jhonathan Villalta went to the ground in a goal attempt against Minnewaska. The ball went wide of the net, but Melrose won the game 7-0 this afternoon at Melrose. The Lady Dutchmen soccer team did not fare as well falling 8-0 to Zimmermann. The volleyball team, however, continued its solid season defeating Morris in three games. In cross country Melrose's boys' team was third while the girls' claimed seventh at meet at New London. Tuesday, Sept. 12
Melrose's Leah Berscheit (left) and Holdingford's Tessa Schwinghammer congratulated each other on their swims in the 400FSR, won by Melrose, won the meet 66-35. The Lady Dutchmen had nine first place finishes in the meet.  At home the Lady Dutchmen were also shining on Tuesday. On the Melrose tennis courts, the Lady Dutchmen pounded out a 4-3 win over LPGE/USA.  That evening in the Melrose gymnasium, the volleyball team had a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-18) win over BOLD. Monday, Sept. 11
It was joyous day on the tennis courts, a good day for a run, but a disappointing outing on the soccer fields Monday Sept. 11.  Kaitlyn Welle (right) and other members of the Lad Dutchmen did their best to work through the St. John's Prep defense but fell 6-0 at Melrose.  While the game was commencing the Dutchmen were finishing their game with Hillcrest Academy at Fergus Fall. That resulted in a 14-2 loss by Melrose. On the Melrose tennis courts the Lady Dutchmen scored a 6-1 win over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa. The cross country teams both finished sixth of 14 teams in a meet at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle. Laura Funk's fifth place finish was the best of any Melrose runner. Preston Poepping finished seventh in the boys' race More on the contests will be in Sept. 20 issue of the Beacon.
Next Up

The Melrose teams continue action today with the tennis team hosting LPGE and the volleyball team hosting BOLD. The swim will travel to Holdingford for a conference meet.

Melrose Area High School Sports 2017-18

It was a mixed day for the Lady Dutchmen teams Tuesday. On the volleyball court the team connected  (Right photo) On the soccer field however Madeline Osborne (24) and the rest of the Lady Dutchmen team fired on all cylinders as (above) Mallari Funk (6) and other hitter repeatedly put the ball to the floor in three-match victory of Montevideo. found it tough to control the ball against Cathedral and fell 10-0. The Lady Dutchmen swimmers had the best times in nine-of-12 events as they defeated Willmar 105-79.
