DUTCHMEN FOOTBALL
Colton Meyer and other Melrose defenders created problems of the Morris Tiger running backs. |
The first quarter of Melrose’s 14-6 win over Morris pretty
much set the tone of the game. Defense would dominate.
From the start of the game both the Dutchmen and Tiger
defenses thwarted offensive drive. Morris stopped the Dutchmen more often then
not by not allowing first downs. Melrose ended Morris drives with sacks and
recovered fumbles.
Melrose’s second quarter touchdown, a 29-yard pass to
Blake Gerads from Matthew Beste, was set up when the Dutchmen defense recovered
a fumble at the Melrose 42. The third
quarter touchdown, a 7-yard pass to Gerads, was set up by after Melrose sacked
the quarterback for a nine-yard loss.
Melrose running game was also in good from as both Anthony
Welle and Zack Pierskalla were able to grind out yards. Ironically Pierskalla’s
biggest impact play, came late in the game. Morris had scored with 7:16 left in
the game, then stopped Melrose with 4:50 left.
The Tigers were driving for a touchdown, but were stopped with
Pierskalla intercepted a pass (http://youtu.be/UCHzNNH-ovk).
Melrose then ran out the clock.
The Dutchmen had four fumble recoveries and an interception in the game.
