Dutchmen Football


Tackles by Jordan Klaphake (21) and other members the Dutchmen team helped Melrose to a 21-14 come from behind win over Maple Lake in the homecoming game capped an up and down week for the Dutchmen and Lady Dutchmen team. Melrose, trailing 14-0 at half-time score three second half touchdowns to take the win.  The last came with about two-minutes in the game on a pass to Brady Birch. Lady Dutchmen Swimming
The swimmers and divers had a strong outing against Holdingford posting a 103-72 win. The team had first place, or the best time in all events but one.
Lady Dutchmen Volleyball
The Lady Dutchmen rebounded from a 3-0 loss to top ranked Morris on Tuesday to defeat Minnewaska 3-1 on Thursday. Homecoming queen Abby Hinnenkamp had 12 kills in Thursday’s win contest.
Melrose Cross Country
The Dutchmen finished fifth and Lady Dutchmen seventh a Payneville on Tuesday. Nathan Budde finished sixth in the boys race. Ashley Herdering took 18th in the girls race.
Dutchmen Soccer
Melrose downed St. John’s Prep in overtime on Monday, but fell 3-1 to Little Falls Tuesday and 4-3 to Becker on Thursday. Good play in the net by Josue Munoz (above) kept Becker from scoring in the second half.  A video of Francisco Cervantes’ goal again Becker can be seen at https://youtu.be/oQlDeCCFopk.  Melrose has a game today at 1 p.m. against Minnewaska.
Lady Dutchmen Tennis
Despite some well played matches the Lady Dutchmen fell 4-3 to Osakis on Tuesday and 5-2 to Minnewaska on Thursday. Tennis competes Saturday in the West Central Conference Tournament at Melrose and Sauk Centre.
Lady Dutchmen Soccer
The Lady Dutchmen had three rough games this week falling 3-0 to St. John’s on Monday, 6-1 to Little Falls on Tuesday and 11-0 to Becker on Thursday.

Dutchmen Soccer
Melrose soccer is busy this week with four games. Jose Hurtado (above) and other Dutchmen worked the ball around St. John’s defenders on Monday to win 3-2 in overtime. They fell 3-1 to Little Falls on Tuesday.
Melrose Cross Country
The Dutchmen finished fifth and Lady Dutchment seventh in the Paynesville Invite on Tuesday. Nathan Budde finished sixth for the boys, Ashley Herdering was 18th for the girls.Lady Dutchmen Swimming
Melrose dominated it is match with Holdingford posting a 103-72 win. It swam the final three events as exhibitions. Outside those races the only first Melrose did not have was in the 100FLY.

Melrose suffered two losses early this week falling 3-0 to St. John’s and 6-1 to Little Falls.
Lady Dutchmen Tennis
Minnewaska topped Melrose 5-2 yesterday in a road game. The Lady Dutchmen won at number one and two doubles.
Lady Dutchmen Volleyball
Morris downed Melrose in three games a Melrose. Scores were 25-15, 25-14, 25-19.

Lady Dutchmen Tennis
The Lady Dutchmen posted a 4-3 win over Sauk Centre at Sauk Centre yesterday afternoon.  The Melrose doubles teams again swept their contests. Melrose also won at number two doubles.
Melrose Soccer
The Dutchmen fell 4-3 to Minnewaska this afternoon at Glenwood. It was an all-around rough day for the soccer teams as the girls fell 8-1 to Zimmermann in a game at Melrose.
Lady Dutchmen Volleyball
The Lady Dutchmen had a 3-1 win over Benson last night at Melrose. Abby Hinnenkamp had a good all-around game with 20 kills, two aces, and 19 digs.

Melrose Cross Country
The Melrose Cross Country team both claimed first place today at the Melrose Invite.  The girls lead by Ashley Herdering (top photo, right) leading the pack, scored 38 points and placed seven runners in the top 20. The team’s average time was 23:13 on the 5K course. Kate O’Brien of Sauk Centre (second from left) finished first in the girls’ race. Nathan Budde (bottom photograph #910) led Melrose to a first place finish in the boys’ division. He also claimed first as an individual. The team had six runners in the top 15 and seven in the 1op 25. The average time of the team was 18:43.2 Melrose earned 38 points to take the meet.
 Lady Dutchmen Volleyball
Melrose’s Lexi Friedrichs (4) Madison Dufner (15) and Makiya Luetmer (14) prepared to make the play as Abby Hinnenkamp kept the ball in the air in Melrose’s 3-0 over ACGC.  The Lady Dutchmen won 25-14, 25-12 and 25-12.
Lady Dutchmen Tennis
The Lady Dutchmen tennis team came back from Long Prairie with a 5-2 win.  Hanna Wiechmann and Julia Welle earned a three set win at number three doubles. All three sets were 6-4. Kayla Schleper, number four singles, and  the number two doubles team of Christine Rolfzen and Haiden Rausch both lot only one game in  their two set victories.

Lady Dutchmen Swimming

Melrose downed ROCORI 110-71 this evening at Cold Spring. The Lady Dutchmen took first in all events except the 100 Breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay, which the counted as exhibitions.  The 200 individual medley and 200 freestyle relay squad claimed the top three spots.
Melrose Soccer
Both the Dutchmen and Lady Dutchmen were shutout by Cathedral this afternoon. The boys fell 2-0 and the girls fell 5-0. Esmerelda Raya had 15 saves for the Lady Dutchmen.

Lady Dutchmen Soccer
The Lady Dutchmen (top photo) enjoyed either victory treat, or an energy shot from Chocolate Smore’ cookies. The cookies ,brought by Courtney Koepke, were said to be the secret energy food for Lady Dutchmen as they posted two win in Melrose Invitational. They might have been. Melrose defeated Crookston 4-3, rallying for two second-half goals. Courtney Koepke scored all four the Lady Dutchmen goals. In the second game Koepke scored the Lady Dutchmen’s only goal in a 1-0 victory over Walker.  Goalkeeper Wendy Smith earned the shutout. Melrose Dutchmen Football
Dutchman quarterback Reegan Nelson (61)  took the snap from center Will Stone (61) during the game. In the backfield is Bryce Stalboerger (27).
Pierz downed Melrose 46-6 at Melrose this evening. Pierz dominate every aspect of the game holding Melrose to 49 yards rushing and 95 yards passing.   The Pioneers took a 19-0 first quarter lead and never looked back.  Melrose’s only score came on a third quarter pass from Reegan Nelson to Brady Birch. The Dutchmen next face Rockford next Friday night.
Lady Dutchmen Tennis
Melrose’s match with Montevideo, which was moved to today because of rain yesterday, has been suspended to be completed at a later date.
Lady Dutchmen Volleyball
The Lady Dutchmen Volleyball team fell 3-1 to Montevideo yesterday at Montevideo. Game scores were 25-27, 19-25, 25-23, 12-25.  Abby Hinnenkamp had 13 kills in the game. Taryn Van Heel had 30 digs.

A rainbow appeared over the Dutchmen field prior to the football game.

Dutchmen and Lady Dutchmen Cross Country
The Melrose Dutchmen and Lady Dutchmen Cross Country meet at New London-Spicer has been cancelled.
Tuesday, Sept. 13
It was busy night for Melrose Sports fans Tuesday, Sept. 13. Five of the six fall sports team took to the field and finished with three wins, one tie and a one loss.
Lady Dutchmen Volleyball
 Attacks by Delany Anderson (10), Mckena Schmiesing (11) and Mia Meyer (71) were key factors in the Lady Dutchmen 3-0 2 win over BOLD on Tuesday. Lady Dutchmen Tennis
 Becky Klaphake (above) had a two set win in the 6-1 Melrose victory over Yellow Medicine East. Two set wins for common for the Lady Dutchmen. The one loss was  three set match, decided by a tiebreakers in the third set. Madison Worms, number two singles, did not allow a point. The number three doubles unit of Camryn Brinkman/Julia Welle surrendered only one game.

Molly Kraemer pushed the ball down field as Melrose scored four goals against Becker.  It was not enough as Becker won 13-4 at Melrose.
Lady Dutchmen Swimming
The swim team had strong performances in swimming and diving as it defeated Minnewaska 108-74 at Minnewaska.  The team had good time in all events. Mady Brinkman scored a 170 in diving.
Dutchmen Soccer
The Dutchmen tied 1-1 with Becker in a contest at Becker. Overtime was played.

Cody  Pundsack rush for 80 yards and scored a touchdown for  Melrose in its season opener.
Melrose dominated the second half of its 40-20 win over Sauk Centre on Friday night. The Dutchmen scored five touchdowns, three in the second half.  Reegan Nelson threw for over 100 yards and two touchdowns. Tyler Ritcher scored two touchdowns late in the game to ice the game for the Dutchmen. Cody Pundsack had 80 yards rushing and scored a touchdown Melrose had two great kick off returns. Jordan Klaphake's 90 yard return gave Melrose its first touchdown. Makalay Schleper went undefeated as Melrose swept MACCRAY in tennis
Melrose took a 7-0 win over MACCRAY yesterday at Melrose. The Lady Dutchmen lost only seven games while taking all seven contests in two sets.
Makayla Schleper, number four singles, number two doubles (Hayden Rausch and Kristen Bussmann), and the number three doubles (Camryn Brinkman and Allie Toenies) did not loss a game in their matches.

Jose Hurtado went above the head of Hillcrest Lutheran Academy to move the ball down field in the final seconds of play.
Melrose controlled almost every aspect of the game but the final score in the 3-2 loss to Hillcrest Lutheran Academy yesterday.  Juan Espino and Francisco Cervantes scored for Melrose.  Luis Hernandez played will in the goal.  For most of the second half Melrose was playing in the HLA half of the field.
Lady Dutchmen Volleyball
The Lady Dutchmen fell 3-0 in their season opener at Morris on Thursday. Mia Meyer had 10 kills for Melrose while Avri Bitz had 23 assists. Game scores were 25-22, 25-10, 25-22.
Trivia Question Answer:
While a team must score 75 points to win a match in the first three or four sets, it can win a five set match by only scoring 65 points.

Juan Espino score five goals for Melrose in the win over Hillcrest Lutheran.

Madison Worms won the number two doubles contest at Benson.
The Lady Dutchmen fell 4-3 to Benson Tuesday. The team had some tough contests taking the number one and number two singles and number one doubles.

Dutchmen Cross Country
Melrose had two medalists at the meet in Morris Tuesday. The team had few a number of runners place in the top 20 in both the boys and girls races.

Melrose opened its dual meet season with a win over Alexandria. The team dominated the freestyle events.
